The attack against satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo, on Wednesday, 7, has been strongly impacting on social media in Brazil. A study conducted by Polis Consulting, using the market research software in real time NetBase, reveals that the impact on Brazilians in the first 36 hours after the terrorist act has been consolidating in the form of concern about freedom of the press and the dead in the attack. The finding is part of the main expressions used to comment on the incident – “freedom”, “press”, “attack”, “attended” and “dead”. They were just not quoted more than the words used to locate the attack – respectively “Paris” and “#JeSuisCharlie”.
According to Polis/NetBase, until the end of the afternoon of Thursday, 8, more than 83.7 thousand mentions in Portuguese about the terrorist attack were recorded. Of the netizens whose geographic location was identified – more than two thirds of the database researched – 71% are from Brazil and 17% from Portugal. Only between yesterday afternoon and Friday morning, 9, the total number of mentions of terrorist actions grew by 18,000 citations in Portuguese, and the trend is that they increase during the day.
The social media research tool created a “cloud of expressions” with the most spoken words. Although clouds are mobile – that is, their content changes dynamically according to what is said in the networks – it is possible to verify the indignation of netizens because of the crossing of expressions used. For example, the sum of repetitions of “terrorist attack”, “attended”, “attack” and “dead” exceeds 5,000. The study also shows that the Portuguese-speaking population of the web has been connecting the attack to religious causes: the word “Mahomey” had more than 1.7 thousand mentions already in the first 24 hours.
