Segmentation in inbound marketing: customization is the key word
Many companies and entrepreneurs still do not apply one of the most accurate techniques of building brand, authority and making sales. So if that's your reality, it's time to know more!
Inbound marketing, a non-intrusive approach that aims to attract customers through relevant content, relies heavily on targeting to function effectively.
Segmenting your audience will allow you to apply your strategy according to the specific characteristics, needs and interests of different customer groups. After all, not all consumers are the same and not all people think the same. Understanding your customer groups or personas will make all the difference when it comes to separating the weeds from the wheat.
Here are some tips we apply daily with our inbound marketing customers for right segmentations:
Create Detailed Person
Developing personas is essential. They represent fictitious archetypes of their ideal customers based on real data and research. This allows you to create content that resonates with the needs of each group.
Do market research to collect relevant demographic, behavioral, and psychographic data about your target audience. This will provide you with information that is essential for creating personas.
Conduct interviews with existing and potential customers, or create online questionnaires to collect insights into your needs, challenges, and preferences. This can help create more accurate personas.

Map the Buyer's Journey
Mapping the buyer's journey is essential for companies, as it allows a deep understanding of the customer's decision-making process. By viewing each stage of the journey, from the recognition of a need to the acquisition of the product or service, companies can adapt their marketing and sales strategies in a precise and relevant way.
This allows for more effective communication, offering the right content at the right time, which in turn increases the chances of conversion. In addition, mapping the buyer’s journey helps companies identify possible friction points or challenges that customers can face along the way, allowing for the implementation of improvements to provide a smoother and more satisfying experience.
Customize the Experience
Use marketing automation to customize the user experience, search and acquire tools that help create, send emails and automate processes, as well as content recommendations, so be professional, because the power of customization cannot be underestimated.
Inbound marketing tools allow you to collect a large amount of data about visitors' behavior on your site, social media interactions, and responses to email campaigns. This data is vital to understand your target audience and create precise segmentations.
With detailed data on hand, you can create highly personalized content and messages directed to different segments of audience. This increases the relevance of your campaigns and, consequently, the conversion rate.
Not to mention marketing automation tools can automatically segment leads based on their behavior and history. This saves time and ensures that leads receive content appropriate to the buyer's journey stage they are in.
Other benefits are nutrition of effective leads, educating them and building relationships before seeking conversion. Automation tools can deliver the right content at the right time, which is critical for converting leads into customers. And also the continuous monitoring of the performance of campaigns. The tools allow real-time metrics to be analyzed, identifying what is working and what needs to be adjusted in their targeting strategies.
Ad segmentation: in search of effective conversions
In ads, targeting is a determining factor in targeting your budget to marketing efficiently and improving conversion rates. Online advertising platforms such as Google Ads and Meta Ads offer a variety of targeting options, from demography to purchasing behavior.
To facilitate reading and understanding (then you can go deeper by searching each of them), I have added the best tips for segmentation in ads, which we also developed with our performance team here at Nvx Digital.
- Meet your target audience: Before creating advertising campaigns, whatever the platform, conduct a thorough survey of your target audience. Understand your preferences, behaviours and needs. Search social media profiles, digital influencers, consumer groups and discussions.
- Use demographic and behavioral data: Gather demographic information, interests, and browsing history to create highly relevant ads for different segments of the audience. The ad tools have algorithms that facilitate delivery, so it is important to clearly and accurately segment who you want to “scramble”.
- Test and Refine Constantly: Ad platforms like Google allow you to test different segments. Do not be afraid to try and adjust your strategies based on results. Most successful campaigns are tested and adjusted according to results achieved, creative change, copy and formats as well as segments is part of the inbound marketing process.
Examples of successful segmentation
In this part of the article, I highlight large corporations that currently represent best practices in the case of segmenting to attract satisfied customers/users!
Netflix
The famous streaming platform is an excellent example of segmentation. It personalizes the recommendations of films and series based on the viewing history of each user, making the experience highly relevant. Algorithms perform this task, delivering content of interest for topics, viewing time and preferences.
Netflix analyzes the viewing behavior and preferences of millions of subscribers to customize content offer. This results in accurate recommendations of films and series for each user, increasing retention and encouraging continuous subscription.
The platform also segmentes its price offers in different plans to meet a variety of customer needs, becoming one of the most successful market segmentation strategies in the entertainment industry. Netflix's targeted approach demonstrates how deep understanding of the target audience and customization of offers can lead to substantial growth and sound sales results.
Spotify
The most popular music streaming platform seeks to segment its user base according to its musical tastes, creating custom and even shareable playlists. This results in a custom-made musical experience, keeping users engaged and satisfied, while providing an ideal environment for advertisers to reach specific audiences with relevant messages.
Accurate targeting on Spotify exemplifies how understanding and meeting consumer needs can lead to the success of a streaming and advertising platform.
Amazon
This is a classic example of success in using segmentation for exceptional results. The e-commerce giant employs robust segmentation based on the purchasing history, customer preferences, navigation behavior and geographic location.
This strategy allows Amazon to present highly relevant products and personalized offers to customers, bringing significantly higher conversion rates. In addition, the company promotes customer loyalty through precise recommendations, continuously improving user experience.
Amazon's success in segmentation illustrates how to understand the customer's profile and meet your needs in a personalized way can boost growth and loyalty, which bring revenue results.
What not to do!
Situations to be avoided to get the best segmentations in your marketing strategies, here could write a huge list of mistakes that are still made by many companies and businesses, but I preferred to stay in only three:
1. Overly broad segmentation: avoid very broad segmentations that do not allow effective customization. When using email marketing, for example, try to create specific segmentations that combine engaged and undetermined leads, leave aside those who do not engage (they have not opened their emails sent in recent months). Or even try to create segmentations only with leads that have opened their latest campaigns and converted into certain landing pages.
2. Ignore analytical data: Try not to ignore the power of data and analysis. They are essential to understand the performance of your targeting strategies. Do a channel analysis, conversions and qualifications. Try to understand which audiences or products were more interested, adapting even more personalized strategies.
3. Do not follow changes of the public: remember that consumer interests and behaviors constantly evolve. Don't settle for a static targeting strategy. Here again, it's worth the hint of testing to understand, concentrating efforts where it makes more sense. If a segmentation for inbound marketing or even ads does not show results, search for the new trends or preferences that users are adopting. The data will also be valuable at this stage.
Conclusion
Segmentation is the backbone of successful strategic marketing actions. Both in the organic and paid media parts, the ability to understand and meet the needs of specific customer groups is fundamental if you want to succeed.
By following the tips you have offered in this article, where you have brought remarkable examples and how to avoid common traps, it is possible and feasible to significantly increase your chances of success in prospecting and sales, building stronger relationships with your customers.
