Increase your click rate in emails: discover the power of CTOR

Email marketing is still one of the most effective and inexpensive tools that are available to companies to communicate with their customers and prospects. However, just sending emails without any strategy is no longer enough. One of the metrics that really matters is the click rate, when a lead or contact clicks on some CTA (Call To Action). This metric is known in marketing as CTOR (Click-to-Open Rate).

CTOR measures the effectiveness of your email marketing campaigns in engaging and attracting the attention of the target audience, so that you click buttons or links with some strategic direction.

A high CTOR indicates that email is relevant and interesting to your leads, and that links are clear and flashy. A low CTOR, on the other hand, may indicate that the email is not relevant or that the links are not attractive enough to justify the click.

In this article, I will explain what CTOR is and how you can increase it to improve the performance of your campaigns to search for effective results.

What's CTOR?

CTOR, or Click-to-Open Rate, is one of the essential metrics in the world of email marketing. It represents the percentage of people who opened your email and then clicked on one or more of the links included in it. In other words, CTOR is the measure of the recipient's involvement after they have opened the email.

The formula for calculating CTOR is relatively simple:

CTOR = (Number of Single Clicks / Number of Single Openings) x 100

If you, for example, send an email to 1,000 people and 300 of them open the email, and of those 300, 60 click on a link, your CTOR will be 20% (60 divided by 300, multiplied by 100).

And it is important not to confuse: CTOR is a valuable metric that goes beyond the click rate (CTR), which measures the number of clicks in relation to the total number of emails sent.

CTOR focuses only on people who have shown enough interest to open the email, making it a more accurate indicator of the involvement and impact of the email content.

The importance of CTOR

Now that you know the main concept of CTOR, it's time to understand why it's so important to your email marketing campaigns. Check out some reasons:

Engagement Measurement

CTOR is a key indicator of how recipients are interacting with their emails. If CTOR is high, it shows that your emails are relevant and attractive to the target audience. On the other hand, a low CTOR suggests that recipients are not involved with content and therefore it is time to reevaluate and re-do their email marketing strategy.

Quality x Quantity

While the traditional click rate (CTR) measures the gross number of clicks in your emails, CTOR focuses on clicks in relation to the number of openings. This means that CTOR highlights quality over quantity. Having a high CTOR means you're getting clicks from people who really care about your content, which is more valuable than random clicks.

Optimization of the Opening Rate

To improve CTOR, you need to optimize the opening rate of your emails. This means that you not only need to create attractive and relevant email content, but also ensure that your subject line is captivating and persuasive. An attractive and creative subject line can lead to a higher opening rate, which in turn will positively affect CTOR.

Conversions and Revenue

CTOR is directly linked to the conversions and revenue generated by your email marketing campaigns. When recipients open their emails and click on the links, they are more likely to perform desired actions, such as making a purchase, talking directly to the sales and service sector by WhatsApp, signing up for an event or downloading an e-book/Infographic.

Therefore, a high CTOR can lead to an increase in conversions and, consequently, the much desired return on investment (ROI) of their campaigns.

Strategies to Increase CTOR

Now that we know why CTOR is important, I invite you to explore some effective strategies to increase it and improve the performance of your email marketing campaigns:

1. List segmentation for upload

List segmentation should be treated as a priority to increase CTOR. Instead of sending generic emails to your entire contact list, divide it into segments based on demographic, behavioral and mainly interest characteristics. Some email marketing tools also allow you to select only the leads that have interacted at some point and that are truly engaged.

This enables you to create highly relevant messages for each group, increasing the chances of clicks and interactions. For example, if you own a clothing store, you can segment your list based on gender, allowing the sending of product offerings specific to men and women. This increases the likelihood that recipients will click on the products that really interest them.

2. Customization that makes the difference

Personalization is another powerful strategy to increase CTOR. The recipients are more likely to click links and engage with the content when they feel personally connected with closer communication. Customize your emails including the recipient's name on the body of the email and recommending products or services based on your previous purchase history or behavior on the site.

Most tools offer variables like [First Name] or [Full Name], which can be used right at the beginning of a conversation and even in parts of content that are attractive for persuading clicks. Also, use customization to create persuasive and relevant subject lines. A subject line that refers to the recipient's purchase history, for example, may arouse interest and encourage the opening of the email.

3. Relevant and Valuable Content

As with any inbound marketing strategy, the content of your email plays a key role in CTOR. Make sure that the content is relevant, valuable and directed to the interests and needs of your target audience. Avoid generic emails that do not offer clear benefits to the recipient.

Be clear and concise in your communication and highlight above all the benefits and advantages of your product or service. Use high-quality images, but with small sizes to open on any server and format email in an attractive way to make reading easy and enjoyable.

4. A/B test

The A/B test is a valuable technique to optimize your emails and increase CTOR. It involves sending two different versions of the same email to similar recipient groups.

Situations where the AB test can be used to increase click rates in emails:

  • Subject: Test different subjects to see which one has the highest opening rate.
  • Content: Test different types of content, such as images, videos or text, to see which one is most effective in generating clicks.
  • Layout: Test different email layouts to see which one is easier to read and browse.
  • Upload times: Test different upload times to see which one is most likely to receive clicks.

Examples of emails where CTOR was applied and brought good results:

  • An e-mail from an online store that sent a discount coupon to customers who opened the email. The email had an attractive title, relevant content and a clear and direct CTA. As a result, the CTOR of the email was 25%.
  • An e-mail from a technology company that announced a new product. The email gathered flashy images and videos, informative content and a CTA that encouraged the recipient to learn more about the product. As a result, the CTOR of the email was 18%.
  • An email from a service company sent a free e-book to customers who would sign their newsletter. The email provided an interesting title, valuable content and a CTA that encouraged the recipient to sign up for the newsletter. As a result, the CTOR of the email was 15%.

In all these cases, CTOR was high because the email was relevant to the target audience and the links were clear and flashy.
