1. Planning for the future
This is the first hint to get the pace right. When you style your website, plan a two-year future to organize your web presence. Things can change for sure, but if you have a well-defined long-term plan your site can offer the best trends in design and UX.
Searching for what is most current and used in the market, including tools and platforms, will help you find the most effective resolution not only for the moment, but also for the long term and reduce re-development prices.
2. Make your website responsive to mobile devices
If your site is not yet responsive, stop everything!!!
According to Statista, 63% of Google searches are done through smartphones. In addition, Google's search engine prioritizes discovery and cataloging (also known as tracking or indexing) of mobile versions of sites instead of desktop versions.
These two facts alone tell you why you need a mobile responsive site.
“Mobile-responsive” means that your web pages carry well on computers and mobile devices. The display of your page will be adapted based on the device a viewer is using to search.
Use Google mobile compatibility test to get a general idea of how mobile compatible your website pages are.
A good mobile responsive site is displayed well in all screen sizes, has easily digestible information and is stable, i.e. page elements like images and buttons do not change during scrolling.
3. Keep your website safe
Every site must have an SSL (Secure Socket Layer) certificate. SSL certificates are a security signal from the site for Google's search engine people, browsers, and bots.
You can get one from your web hosting provider. However, there may be more economical and resource-rich SSL options elsewhere. Look it up before you commit to anything. Make sure you renew your SSL before it expires, or your website may have a security lapse.
Some browsers like Chrome block access to unsafe websites, displaying an alert screen. Having the security certificate should be part of the investment related to the accommodation.
4. Reduce page loading times
Google users and search engines prefer fast loading web pages instead of slow pages. If your pages load slowly, Google will not rank them highly. More importantly, users will become impatient and leave their website.
Slow loading pages are defined as pages that take more than two seconds to load. To check the loading time of any web page, use Google PageSpeed Insights.
Here in this article, we explain everything about the latest Google update with some tips to improve the loading time of the pages.
5. Improve browsing your website and user experience
The sites are cataloged as follows: Google search engine robots will examine the pages of your site to try to understand them. If bots understand the content and value of their web pages well, they will make their pages detectable in organic search results.
The better your site is, the higher it will be ranked and the more visitors you will have.
Google is concerned with offering users the best browsing experience possible. Offer this high quality experience and you will have a higher ranking in the search results.
Some actions you can add to your website to improve browsing and user experience:
Search bar: include a search bar throughout the site, preferably as part of the top menu bar.
Categories: Add categories and subcategories to your website to help users find exactly what they are looking for. For example, a cooking site can have a category of recipes, with a subcategory for world cuisine and one specific for Asian recipes.
6. Use keywords across the site
This is important for organic reach and is part of SEO. All sites have one or some main topics, with topics branching through them. These topic words are known as keywords.
Think of all relevant topics and topics on your site. Then include these keywords in:
- Page Title Tags
- Subject header tags (H1, H2, etc.)
- URLs
- Category names
- Halfpage descriptions, which appear as descriptions in Google search results
- Alternative text for images, which are descriptive words that help search bots and people who cannot see the image to understand what images are
- Paragraph text
Create a cluster of primary and secondary keywords related to your sector or subject. Then add them to your web pages and blog posts.
To get keyword ideas and see what people are actively searching online, use a keyword search tool such as Google Keyword Planner or SemRush.
Try to find a balance between the relevant words for your website topics and the topics that people are actively looking for. But watch out, don't use keywords too often, or Google can interpret your site as spam and drop it in the search engine results.
7. Follow the trend of modern design
To stay competitive, your website needs to look current. Here are some trendy modern design for websites you should keep in mind:
Use whitespace: Do not place information in all spaces of your web pages. Allow the pages to “breath” by focusing on some key elements, especially when you are rolling a page.
Choose the brand colors: in general, try not to use more than three colors for your brand. Try to standardize with what is being used on social networks.
Minimalism is becoming more and more fashionable: Your website doesn't have to be flashy. Try harder to do more with less. Use some carefully selected photos and videos on the main pages of your website.
Make header menus simple: do not add many clickable URLs to your top menu. You look confused. Instead, use simple terms and then branch to other pages.
For example, if the site has a menu item “Services” it should be linked to a page that lists specific services. Then, when you open the specific service pages, a “Find out more” button helps converts to interest and sales.
8. Have clear CTAs
And since we're talking about the above button, this tip is very important:
An action call is a highlight in content-related spaces that directs visitors to your website to perform a certain action. It usually comes in the form of a big, well-placed button that indicates a simple course of action.
“ Sign up for free”, “Find out more”, “Assine” and “Start using” are good examples.
Without a CTA, your website is just a source of information. It will not be clear what they should do with the initial information they find when they interact with your website.
For example, let's say you develop an online course and create a web page full of course information. You announce and send people to this page. If you do not include a button or link “Sign up now” somewhere on the page, you will essentially be giving people superficial information and no sense of direction.
Ideally, you should put your CTA near the top of your home page so that your site visitors don't have to do anything to find it.
Conclusion
The list could be even bigger, but I chose what makes most sense for those who seek to achieve results efficiently. Last but not least, be demanding about what images you use on your site. Avoid loading too many images or videos, or your loading speed will decrease.
The images you include should be intentional and add value to your website. They should also be well lit, focused, organized and personal for your brand (read: avoid photos from the image bank whenever possible).
Some of these 10 tips on how to improve one site are simpler than others, but none of them require a thorough knowledge of coding. It is especially easy to create a better website when you use a high quality website builder.
