What are spam bots and how to protect yourself

A spam bot, or spam bot, is a computer program that ill-intentioned people employ to send large amounts of spam messages automatically. In this article we will explain what they are and how to protect yourself from these attacks.

The program is simple and usually based on a list of email addresses collected through mining or search for email on the network. Email scrapers search the Internet and then they combine all the addresses into huge lists. After that, the spam bot uses fake accounts to send spam or electronic waste mail.

However, spam bots are not limited to emails only. They can operate all over the internet, and the main point is that they send unwanted spam messages. This applies to a wide variety of websites and applications, including:

  • Social media platforms
  • Forum
  • Message apps
  • Email hosting providers

Spammers have many reasons for using spam bots. See what are the most common situations:

  • Spread malware (computer virus)
  • Operate electronic blows
  • Send spam comments
  • Post degrading content
  • Send backlinks to improve search engine ratings
  • Spread unwanted ads

Many websites and programmers use different anti-spam measures to prevent spam bots from performing repetitive and automated malicious tasks. However, spammers continue to collect email addresses, finding new ways to create accounts and sending unwanted messages.

ToggleHow they work and what types of spam bots

There are three types of spam bots, and each one works a little differently.

Spam bots can:

  • Collect. These bots search social media sites and accounts, looking for e-mail addresses. The programmer uses these addresses to send mass email messages. According to studies, about 320 billion spam e-mail messages reach the inboxes every day. Most of them originate from spam bots.
  • Connect. Social media accounts and web posts originate with simple forms. A spam bot can fill in the necessary information and start sharing a note developed by the programmer. Some spam bots use very simple messages (such as “Wow”) to escape social media screening tools.
  • Talk. Some spam bots can also maintain rudimentary conversations with the victims. They answer simple questions, disclose more information, or imitate legitimate conversation.

What spam bot programmers usually expect:

  • Share. They provide information about a new product or discount
  • Influence. They share links to a website, hoping to fool Google's algorithms and make the site look like it has authority
  • To cause damage. They share malware or infections, usually to apply financial scams
The 3 most common types of spam bots

The idea is to deepen on how spam bots work and how they can harm you or your company. The three most used types of spam bots differ mainly in where you can find them.

Spam bots can be used in:

Websites

The notes generated by spam bot appear in the comments section of the sites and also in registration forms or even the traditional “Talk to Us”. Sophisticated bots can skip obstacles, including the completion of challenges on CAPTCHA buttons. But unprotected websites allow bots to leave comments that contain links, email addresses or both.

In most cases, spammers use bots to leave spam comments that promote specific services or malicious websites. Alternatively, they can use them to post spam messages with more personal reasons, such as promoting a specific view of a heated political topic or just to trollar.

Social networks

Bots create accounts with almost real appearance, complete with profile photos. They can share again information that pleases the programmer and respond to other posts with data developed by the programmer. Those bots are prolific. Twitter removes 10 accounts per second and yet others appear to replace them.

Many spam bots operate on social networks, mainly because billions of Internet users use platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. A spam bot can also infect a message application and act as a typical chatbot. It works in a similar way to a forum bot, as it creates false accounts and misleading posts.

Posts that this type of bot creates usually promote popular product offers, free items, adult content, or fake and fraudulent offers. It can also simply promote websites that expose users even more to scams or spam content.

Spam bots not only create fake profiles to do all this, they also steal personal data and credentials to violate and kidnap real user accounts. A spam bot can generally take a social network profile by filling in credentials, a cyber attack that uses stolen or violated credentials and other data to hack accounts.

Email

With a long list of verified email addresses, a hacker can send spam at will. Messages may contain offers, links or other actions that the developer expects the reader to perform.

A typical email spam bot does two main things:

  • Search the web for email addresses to create email lists
  • Send spam emails that spread malware or help spammer in other ways

Spam bots can find email addresses using different methods. They are usually programmed to check web pages for email addresses and search for online text that follows the email address format.

You've probably already found or been the victim of at least one of those spam bots. You have certainly deleted a spam message from your email, read a fake post on social media, or read about some unwanted message (usually advertisements) in the comments section of a news article.

How to Block a Spam Bot

Successful spam bots are attractive for hackers. As a consumer, you can make them less effective. As a programmer or website owner, you can stop them completely.

Users can:

  • Report – Spam messages tend to be unprofessional, insistent and irrelevant. When you see them, signal them.
  • Delete. Don't get involved with any spam notes. Remove it instead.
  • Educate. Tell everyone you know about the steps you take to combat spam.

Companies may:

  • Innovate. Use technology like CAPTCHA or one of the alternatives we describe on our blog to keep spam notes away from your websites.
  • Hide. Do not publish email addresses openly.
  • Delete. It is tempting to publish spam comments on a blog, especially when the notes look flattering. Don't fall for it. Remove spam.

You can also use machine learning techniques to differentiate spam and valid content. Here are other ways to avoid spambots:

Use Captcha

Using the Captcha solution is one of the easiest and common ways to protect your forms. Using a simple script (e.g. 1 + 1= ?) can effectively prevent a spambot from abusing your form.

You may think your customers will be annoyed by selecting all images that contain pedestrian tracks to use your form, but these security measures are now standard and common in the sector. And the good news is that most Captcha solutions provide an audible version by filling in the form, ensuring that visually impaired users can complete the action.

The audible version is also a great backup solution for a frustrated user who cannot figure out which letter is this wavy line.

Google's ReCAPTCHA is a free CAPTCHA solution that can be quickly added to your forms and has “adaptable challenges” based on how the user is interacting with your site, which means that you can minimize or eliminate CAPTCHA friction for “real people” detected.

Use JavaScript instead of HTML

Spam bots face difficulties working with Javascript codes instead of simple HTML. To avoid spam bots, you need to replace the discrete “email field” code that HTML contains with javascript codes so spam bots can detect while examining the pages. By using the Javascript signup form code, you can avoid spam bot problems instead of using simple HTML codes only.

Include a link to cancel the registration

You should link to your subscribers to cancel the subscription in all your emails. Include orientation text as “If you don’t want to receive our emails, feel free to cancel the application” will help make it clear for them to adjust their communication preferences. Putting a button to cancel the registration in each email is the best and clearest option, as it offers your subscribers an easy way to disable and also creates confidence that you are not forcing them to stay on your email list.

Custom confirmation message

Create a custom confirmation message for your subscribers to inform them that the registration has been completed and successful. This confirmation message not only gives a special extra touch, but can also help in a technical aspect, as you can track who arrives at the thank-you page within your email marketing automation system and Google Analytics to see trends, process complications or problems, as well as track whether this statistics increases over time.

Conclusion

Now that you know how spam bots work and what they are, you can certainly see how problematic they can be. The main problem is the large number of bots, because they are like a plague and are all over the Internet. In addition, the spambots are getting more sophisticated over time, leading us to develop additional and improved ways to fight them.

Fortunately, various measures and solutions are available to companies and can offer a reliable defense mechanism against bots. Apply the solutions discussed in this article, I highlighted the main and easiest to apply to ensure that bots do not represent a problem you need to deal with on your website or platforms.
